What are the international standards for efficient use of energy?

Countries that signed the Kyoto Protocol are required to use less oil, gas and coal in order to reduce the greenhouse gases emission. The EU Directive 2002/91/EC on the energy performance of buildings came into force in January 2006. It was incorporated by all EU Members' national legislations and complies with Kyoto targets. The Directive ensures that building standards across Europe place a high emphasis on minimizing energy consumption.


What is the Energy Performance Certificate?

The EU Directive on energy performance of buildings will affect nearly all EU citizens. The most visible change it has brought to European energy issues is the Energy Performance Certificate. This certificate is required whenever apartments, houses and buildings are sold or rented. The European Union has allowed three years (from January 2006) for each Member State to implement this part of the Directive. The certificate must also be issued when a new building

is constructed. Large public buildings are required to display their Energy Performance Certificate publicly.
